Shallotte, North Carolina is situated along US Highway 17, between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC and has a population of approximately 4100. The shopping hub of Brunswick County, Shallotte is home to over 600 businesses ranging from locally-owned ventures to nationally-recognized brands. The climate in Shallotte is mild, with an annual average of 74 degrees, allowing for year-round participation in outdoor activities.
Incorporated on March 6, 1899, early references to the town and river of Shallotte date back to 1734. According to the town website “Shallotte received its name from a traveler who crossed the river by ferry and referred to the river as the "Charlotte" River. The Charlotte River later took on the name of the Shallotte River. The town was later called Shallotte.” The Shallotte River runs from the Green Swamp to the Atlantic Intracostal Waterway where it empties into the ocean between Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach.

There are 100 golf courses within an hour’s drive, there are 40 signature golf courses literally minutes away, and every course in Brunswick County is within a 20-mile radius. Brick Landing Plantation, Briarwood Golf Club, Ocean Ridge Plantation, Ocean Isle Beach Golf Course, River’s Edge Golf Club, and Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club are all less than 5 miles from Shallotte.
Shallotte has several shopping centers anchored by nationally-recognized department stores and big-box stores, as well as myriad boutiques and small, local businesses to suit every consumer’s shopping needs.
This 10 acre park in the heart of downtown Shallotte is “part of a larger revitalization effort by the town of Shallotte to create a downtown recreation destination that will also help support businesses in the central business district,” according to the town’s website. In 2015, Rachel Johnson, Shallotte’s Parks & Recreation and Business Promotional Coordinator, won the Grand Prize in Parks & Recreation Business and Camp Business Magazine’s Great Play Giveaway. According to BCI Burke Company, who provided the prize, “The Burke Intensity® playground she won includes all new play events from our fitness product line, which is designed to challenge and exercise children’s bodies while they play. A selection of climbers, spinners and overhead events make up this active and fun playground for families to enjoy while spending time together outdoors!
The Shallotte Farmer’s Market at Mulberry Park, runs on Saturdays, 8am through 12pm, from May through September. Offerings include locally-grown vegetables and fruits, handmade gifts, and homemade treats. According to localharvest.org, “every week it's a new market as produce comes into season. Some of the products offered may include organically and conventionally grown vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, flowers, plants, seafood, baked goods, jams, jellies, arts and crafts. All items at the market are produced locally by the person selling it. Customers can talk directly with the growers and crafters to ask any questions they may have.” The Shallotte Farmer’s market also offers education on local farming and seasonal eating as well as live music.
Shallotte features SummerFest, a movie and concert series at Mulberry Park. A fun assortment of live music and family-friendly movies entertains visitors free-of-charge on Thursday evenings from June through August.
Holden Beach is a short drive from Shallotte and is one of the best family beaches in the United States. If you're looking for a great place to spend the day with your children where they can enjoy themselves under blue skies where the water and sand are pristine, choose Holden Beach. The town is primarily residential, although it does have a small commercial area.
Sunset Beach is located close to North Carolina’s border with South Carolina. At only 5.8 miles in area, this island has a year-round population of 1,800. Plan to visit there when you are looking for amenities such as fishing, kayaking, surfing, bodyboarding or swimming. This area is also known for its excellent golf courses and hiking trails. There are a variety of restaurants to sample, as well as unique shops to explore during your visit.
Ocean Isle Beach is a favorite among Brunswick surfing fans. This beach is also the perfect place for families to enjoy a low-key day in the sand and water, fishing or boating. There are shops and restaurants nearby waiting for you to explore as well.
