The Wilmington office of Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage is hosting a food drive May 9 to 13 to benefit Nourish NC, a non-profit that provides hungry children with healthy food, empowering them to succeed in the classroom and in their community. Nourish NC provides children with eight meals and two snacks each weekend, as well as three meals a day over extended school-designated breaks (holiday, spring and summer).
Through a partnership with New Hanover Co. schools, Nourish NC works with social workers to identify children going hungry on the weekends. Nourish NC feeds more than 619 children enrolled in 29 New Hanover County schools, with the hopes of serving 700 by the end of 2016.
The Wilmington office of Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, which is located at 1001 Military Cutoff Road across from Mayfaire, has about 200 agents and staff. Their goal is to collect at least 400 food items during the drive. The public may drop off non-perishable food items May 9 through May 13 at the Military Cutoff Road office, including pantry staples such as rice, pasta and canned goods.
“Tim Milam is the owner of Sea Coast Advantage and he always ends our sales meetings by urging us to ‘do something nice for someone this week,’” said Allison Horton, an agent with Sea Coast Advantage. “When I discovered that Nourish NC had a goal to feed an additional 100 more children this year, I thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for us to pitch in to help.”
Added Tim Milam, president of Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, “I’m very proud of our team and the initiative they took to put this food drive together. Hunger and food insecurity is a real problem in our community and we are eager to help address this issue.”
According to Nourish NC, half of the 25,547 children in the Wilmington community are on free or reduced lunch. These children are at high risk to experience food insecurity. Nourish NC welcomes local community partners such as Sea Coast Advantage to help in their mission. They work with local food banks, outreach organizations, non-profits, community leaders and local businesses to identiry children in need and to assist with purchasing and delivering the food items.
