History of Havelock/Cherry Point  

Though it was not officially established until 1959, settlers have inhabited the Havelock area since the 19th century, as it was the landing point for a major battle during the Civil War.  The history of Havelock shows that, as a precursor to the Battle of New Bern, an element of the Union Army first landed nearby the Officers’ Club at MCAS Cherry Point.  A few other interesting footnotes are that the city was named after a British officer named Sir Henry Havelock, and in the early days it is said that the production of turpentine and tar were a major economic driver for the area, as these were important to the building of wooden ships, prior to the widespread implementation of the steam engine.
