Visiting the Horry County Museum and learning more about the history of Conway is another good option.  Though many Conway residents fought in the American Revolution, it was initially named Kingston, partly in reference to the large amount of Tories who lived there.  A number of battles took place in areas such as Black Lake and Bear Bluff, both near Kingston.  After the war ended, the name was changed to Conwayborough, to honor General Robert Conway and move away from the loyalist roots.
