Until the 1930s, Oak Island was relatively undeveloped, only frequented by fox hunters. Once the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway was completed in 1936, Oak Island became a true island as the waterway deepened the Elizabeth River and officially severed the island from the mainland of North Carolina.
